Hershey, Pennsylvania may be a town built on chocolate but it has many other delectable activities for travel nurses on assignment here to enjoy… in addition, of course, to the practically mandatory Hershey factory tour. For instance, if indulgence is your goal then start with a visit to the Chocolate Spa where you can partake in such extravagances as a whipped cocoa bath or a chocolate sugar scrub. Once you’re fully relaxed you can head out to the greens for 36 holes of distinctive golf or test your nerves all over again on 60 thrilling rides and attractions at the Hershey theme park.

To escape chocolate altogether, travel nurses can hop on the scenic railways of Middletown and Hummelstown. For a breathtaking trip underground, visit Indian Echo Caverns, a natural phenomenon sure to please the whole family. And for a true adventure without leaving Hershey at all visit ZooAmerica, an 11-acre, year-round North American wildlife park featuring more than 200 animals of 75 species. Special seasonal events include the Creatures of the Night.

Hershey is definitely a town focused on preserving and caring for future generations. In fact, Milton S. Hershey dreamed of creating a perfect town to live, work and play for the employees of his chocolate company. Knowing this it is then easy to understand why in 1963, the M.S. Hershey Foundation offered $50 million to The Pennsylvania State University to establish a medical school and teaching hospital in Hershey.

Ground was broken in 1966 and Penn State's College of Medicine opened its doors to the first class of students in 1967 and Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center accepted the first patients in 1970. Today, this 501-bed world-renowned facility is home to some of the most talented healthcare providers, humane scientists, teachers, students, and employees in all fields.

By the end of June 2008, Penn State Hershey Medical Center admitted 26,684 patients and provided care to 808,642 outpatient and 51,758 emergency-service visits. Penn State Hershey Medical Center has over 7,400 employees, 355 volunteers, and the College of Medicine enrolls more than 600 students annually.

Travel nurses specializing in pediatrics should know that Penn State Children’s Hospital at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center is the only children’s hospital in central Pennsylvania. It also maintains the region’s only Level III (highest level), state-of-the-art neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at Penn State Children’s Hospital received the highest rating for its care to medical, surgical, and trauma patients through Pediatric Intensive Care Unit evaluations. This ranks the PICU among the top in the United States. The hospital is a leader in several specialties including neonatal care, pediatric oncology, pediatric cardiology, pediatric surgery, and pediatric trauma. The Children’s Hospital houses 120 beds and treats more than 125,000 patients annually and was ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of America’s Best Children's Hospitals. Now this is reason enough to crave a travel assignment in Hershey, PA but there’s also plenty more… including the fact that Penn State Hershey Medical Center has been named to the CVI Top 100 and has received the Gold Seal of Approval from the Joint Commission. Travel nurses can be even more impressed that the hospital has been acknowledged for demonstrating excellence in the nursing practice through the Magnet Recognition Program. This is the highest level of recognition the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) can award to a healthcare facility.

In addition to all this, Penn State Hershey Medical Center has been part of the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals® program for the past ten years. Now with all these great things going into one facility… what travel nurse wouldn’t savor an assignment here?
