Once the stomping ground of such icons as F. Scott Fitzgerald and the notorious Al Capone, St. Petersburg, FL has once again awoken from its slumber to offer some good times that are very far from the blue-haired bingo scene. The city is an ideal for a travel nursing assignment. With a waterfront downtown area that pulses with energy and beautiful beaches and nature trails, every day away from the hospital will be filled with something exciting to do. The center of attention, The Pier, takes the futuristic shape of an upside down pyramid with a glass elevator to transport you from its ground-level fishermen’s catwalks, boutiques and food court up to restaurants, a marine aquarium attraction, and a five-story view of Tampa Bay.
St. Petersburg is easily one of the most picturesque and pleasant downtowns of any city in Florida. But in its outreaches, it spreads an impressive blanket of green for outdoor enthusiasts. Two of its most outstanding recreational features include the 2.6-mile Friendship TrailBridge, the nation's longest over-the-water recreation trail, and Weedon Island Preserve, home to the Native American Cultural & Natural History Center.
With it’s punk’d out clubs, chic restaurants and superlative museums St. Pete has the cultural weight to rival many big cities but that’s not the only area it strives in. The healthcare offered in this area is second to none. Residing here is All Children’s Hospital, a leading center for pediatric treatment, education and research. It is one of two freestanding children’s hospitals in the state of Florida, and the only one on Florida’s west coast. Patients come to All Children’s from throughout Florida and from many other states and foreign countries. This facility provides specialized care for children of all ages, from newborns through teens.
All Children’s Hospital was founded in 1926 as the American Legion Hospital for Crippled Children. Today it is a 216-bed teaching hospital affiliated with the University of South Florida College of Medicine and it is one of Cross Country’s exclusive travel nursing facilities. More than 140 pediatric specialists and subspecialists provide state-of-the-art medical and surgical care for children. And in 1999 the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recognized All Children’s pediatric heart transplant program as the most successful such program in the country based on waiting time to transplant and survival at one year from listing. The hospital also has well-established programs in bone marrow transplantation and kidney transplantation.
All Children’s is recognized nationally as an outstanding clinical center in many other areas, including pediatric cancer, immunology, cystic fibrosis, cardiology and cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, genetics, cleft palate and craniofacial disorders. Of course, All Children’s provides expert care for kids with routine medical problems, too. Two-thirds of the surgeries performed yearly in its eight operating suites are outpatient procedures. All Children’s Short Stay Unit makes it possible for many children to have surgery or diagnostic procedures without the anxiety and expense of an overnight hospitalization. For more than 75 years, All Children’s Hospital has cared for children and they will continue to do so well into the future.
